Types of Shutters – Vinyl, Wood, or HDF Shutters
Guide to the most common types of materials used for shutters.
Vinyl (Newport Shutters)
- Waterproof.
- Great for showers and kitchen areas. Mainly used for Day in Day out water spray.
- Our vinyl shutters are made from Solid Extruded Vinyl vs. Less Quality Composite or Hollow Vinyl.
- Not as strong as engineered hardwoods (HDF) or the natural hardwoods.
- ‘Fatter Slats’ – Oval louver slats take away more view.
Engineered Hardwood – HDF (Savannah Shutters)
- ‘Green’ Material, contains 100% recycled and recovered wood fibers.
- Warp free material & resistant to the effects of moisture and temperature change.
- Less expensive than the natural hardwoods.
- Smooth finish, easy to clean, no natural grain, optimal for painted finishes.
- Slim Line design ‘Flat’ louver slats for greater visibility compared to ‘Oval’ Shaped louver slats.
Basswood (Colonial Shutters)
- Versatile due to its natural light creamy-white color.
- Can be stained from the lightest maple color to a dark cherry.
- The smooth and clear grain structure creates a traditional look and feel.
- Can be stained or painted.
- Slim Line design ‘Flat’ louver slats for greater visibility compared to ‘Oval’ Shaped louver slats.

Knotty Alder (Georgian Lodge Shutters)
- Less expensive than some of the other Exotic hardwoods.
- Beautiful graining and swirling knots, creates a beautiful Mountain resort or Rustic Cabin feel.
- Great for stained applications.
- Slim Line design ‘Flat’ louver slats for greater visibility compared to ‘Oval’ Shaped louver slats.
